Force constant and the potential energy distribution have been calculated for the two geometries (C2 and C2h Timberland Canada Outlet symmetry). Eg ≐ E0 - αT2/(T+β) where α and β are constants. The equation satisfactorily represents the experimental data for diamond, Si, Ge, 6H-SiC, GaAs, InP and InAs. The number of alternating permutations with specified peak set is calculated. A recent result of J. Rosen (J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 20 (1976), 377) on the tangent numbers is shown to be a simple consequence of this calculation. Furthermore, the companion result for the secant numbers is proved.
